ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL, THE RUGBY GAME. NOTES AND COMMENTS. '■';. The North Shore-Newton match, which was played on the former club's ground, was not a brilliant exhibition of Rugby. The red and whites had some difficulty in placing a team on the field, and commenced play with 13 men. but as the game progressed they managed to secure two more players. The North Shore team, on the other hand, had a fairly strong combination, and made matters lively for Newton in the first spell. Li the second half, however, Newton played with more determination, and on several occasions gave one the impression that they were going to "turn the tables," but they could not keep up their pressure, owing to the want- of staying power. Both teams made the game as open as possible, especially the green and white;'. who secured the greater part of their score by doing so. x D. Miller, the green and whites' fullback, was easily the best, on his side, and played I good football in both spells. 0. Miller and j Murfit also played well, as did Neighbour at halfback, who was responsible for opening up the game. In the forward section Todd. Griff en, Irvine, and B. Wells were the most prominent. ■ The Newton backs were, very poor, with the exception of Montgomery and Farrant, both of whom stood out on " their own." Linkhorn put in a lot of hard "graft" in the forward line, starting and following up | several rushes. W. Doran and Hooper also worked well. FRANKLIN RUGBY UNION.
