MOTOR,CAR RACE.

' INVERCARGCLL TO DUNEDIN.

[Br TELEGKAI'H.—rKESS ASSOCIATION.]

INVEECAEGILLL. Thursday.

Considerable interest has been taken of late in a local challenge for a race from here to Dunedin and back between De Dion and Russell motor ears. The original negotiations fell through, but to-day R. Murie, in a 15.18-h.p. Russell car, tried conclusions with W. Stone in a 10-h.p.. De Dion Bouton for a wager of £500 a-side. The cars left at 5.15 in the morning. The De Dion arrived at Dunedin at 10.55, stayed five minutes to replenish petrol, the engine being kept running, and arrived back at Invercargill at 4.47 p.m., thus doing the whole journey in lib. 32m. This is a remarkable record considering the condition of the roads. The Russell car broke a spring before reaching Clinton on the up journey and had to.be trucked back.
