POLICE COURT NEWS.
DESERTING HIS FAMILY. At the Police Court yesterday, befor* Mr. Kettle, K.M., William A. Photon, a mill hand, ' was charged with failing to maintain his wife and three children.' Mr. F. W. Brookfield prosecuted. '< Evidence having been given, Mr. Kettle said that Phelan had deliberately deserted his wife and children, and he would make an example <>{ him. Defendant would be sentenced to three months' imprisonment. The order for imprisonment ** suspended for seven days, in order to give the defendant an opportunity of paying off the arrears (£5 lis}. MADDENED BY DP INK. ' Joseph Shearer, a wharf labourer, was charged with assaulting K. W. Burg**:., wharf traffic manager. Sergeant Hendry explained that, some time ago Shearer met with an accident, and visit! he took to drink it almost sent him mad. Ho was under the influence of liquor when he committed the present offence. Defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for seuence when called upon. He was also prohibited for 12 months. MISCELLANEOUS. William Nathan, who did not appear, was fined 20s and Costs for disobeying an order of the Court for the jnaintenaucrt of his illegitimate child. For a similar offence James Wheeler was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant for committal to be suspended for seven days in order to give defendant a chance of paying off the arrears. Three first offenders were, each fined 5s and costs, m- in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and another, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit the amount of his hail (£1).
