THE SCHOOL SYLLABUS.
Sir,—A few words from one having had, unfortunately, an intimate acquaintance with the syllabus may bo just now acceptable. Soon after its adoption a large deputation of Auckland headmasters waited upon the Minister for Education, and pointed out some of its various defects, chief among which wore its vagueness: of meaning and its unwiekL'ticssi The Minister expressed his concurrence with those views, requested the teachers to give it a fair trial of a year or bo, and projniaed to get it then amended in tlio maters coinolained of. Throughout the length ami breadth of the Dominion' similar objections by experts have been raised against it. .Such is the vagueness of the language complained of, ; that ' inspectors and teachers have held numerous conferences in order to unravel-its meaning, or, at least, to arrive at some common .understanding of it! Not to speak of any other matters, surely a syllabus necessitating such meetings for such a purpose is to be severely condemned, and should, before now, have , been radically amended. . A lljjadiiasiki:.
