[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] London, April 3. Dr. Eg ax' (Auckland), who has been absent from New Zealand for some considerable time, has decided not to return there— any rate to live. Callers at the London office of the New Zealand Government have included: —Mrs. A. Eraser (Petone), Miss Vera- Jacobsen (Auckland), Mr. C. J. Griffin, MA, B.fec. (Auckland). Mr. Keir Hardie, who lately returned from the Dominion, describes Mr. E. Tregear, the head of the New Zealand Labour Department, a« "one of the sweetest, strongest, cleanest souls in the Dominion.'' Mr. Nigel A. McLean (Hawke's Bay) has come to Europe in order to obtain further insight into the marine engineering profession, so that his absence from New Zealand will extend over some considerable period. On the 30tii inst. the marriage is to take place at Holy Trinity Church, Chelsea, of the Hon. James Boyle, son of Lord and Lady Glasgow, to Miss Katharine Bowl by, daughter of Mrs. Salvin Bowlby. The bridegroom-elect is the second son of New Zealand's former Governor. JJe is a lieutenant- in the Royal Scots v Fusiliers, and served in the South . African w<.r. Between the- 19th and 30th inst. there are to be at least 100 "society" weddings in and around London. Miss Vera Jacobsen (Auckland) is a recent arrival in London, and the object of her visit ;is to continue her studies in portrait painting —paitieiilarly of children —and ako the composition of pictures. She will prob'iijy become a pupil at Heatherly's School of 1 Figure Painting. Miss Jacobsen travelled to England by the «.s. Kaikoura, and experienced a- very pleasant voyage, although until two days before arriving at Teneriffe the weather had been very cold; On February 28 no fewer than 200 icebergs were passed between the hours of six a.m. and 11 p.m.— ft sight never likely to be forgotten •by those, on board. The. New Zealand friends of Miss Aulsebrook (Auckland) will be interested to learn that- she is making satisfactory progress in ; her professional capacity in London. This young lady,' who is the possessor of a very fine contralto voice, has been singing a "good deal at "At- Homes" . of late, and -she is to give her first concert in London on May 8, 'Lady Brassev having kindly placed her ' town house at Miss . Atilsebrook's disposal .-for.' the occasion. She will be assisted by several favourite London singers. For some months past- Miss Aulsebrook has been continuing her vocal studies under Madame Blanche Marchesi, who will herself assist at the coming concert. An international lawn tennis tourna-ment-.,has been in progress this week on the Metropole courts, Cannes. In. round 1 of the gentlemen's open singles, Mr. A. F. Wilding, who was owing 30, showed brilliant form against M. Philippson, whom he defeated lit 61, —2, and then went mi to dispose of R. Storms in the second round, the scores being —1, 6—o, while in the final contest the New Zealander was successful against Baton de Bertoult, who, although playing consistently, could only win live games from. Mr. Wilding, the result being 6— 6 —3, 6—l. Tennis enthusiasts here are hoping that Mr. Wilding will not play himself out in the South of France and come ."stale" to London when the contests open here. This .morning the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Athenic sailed from London outward bound for New Zealand, via the usual ports. 1 Captain Kempsoil is in c6mhiahd, and Dr. Cl' J. Linton Palmer is the medical officer on board. She carries a fair number of passengers, those in the third class totalling 310. The saloon passengers include, Mr. G. H.
