FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKETS.

Business on the local fruit and produce markets was fairly good in the early part, of the week, but ordinary business at the end of the week was somewhat upset owing to the Easter holiday* The. usual weekly auction sales were held .on Thursday, supplies being generally fully up to requirements, lu potatoes, imports being in excess of demand, sales were difficult to effect at a. further reduction on late quotations, although an upward! move in values may be expected at any moment. In onions the supply was wholly imported from Melbourne and Canterbury, but very little business was transacted, and Stocks are being firmly held in anticipation of higher prices during the next week. Vegetables were in largely increased supply, the quality being generally good, and all sold under fair competition. "Kumars* we're sent forward in huge quantities and realised rather low prices. The supply of poultry was very heavy, but generally the bird!" were in poor condition. All birds of'good weight sold well, whilst poor and indifferent in condition were difficult to quit, even ; ,i low prices. There was .no change in the. value for young pigs, for which the demand was poor. In "dairy produce there was an increased supply of fanners' make of butter, due to the closing down of some of the smaller creameries, and prices ruled low. Fresh eggs were in supply about equal to last week, but the demand was ntit so strong. There was 210 alteration in cheese, bacon, or hams. The fruit market was verv strong throughout the week, and some high prices were realise*!. The. first experimental shipment of South Australian apples and lemons arrived on Monday last, and, all being in excellent condition, sold at highly satisfactory prices. Local fruit was in fairly good supply, and all of good' quality sold at extremely high prices. Island shipment* included bananas and oranges from the 'Cook Group and Tonga, for which there was a keen demand, Mid where the quality was good satisfactory prices were obtained.
