MAGAZINES FOR SEAMEN.
Sir, Kindly allow me through the. medium of your paper to thank the many kind friends who so constantly keep me supplied with magazines and illustrated papers for the seamen visiting our port. In less than three months 177 parcels were given to the different vessels visiting Auckland. Eacli parcel contains about four magazines, a number ot papers, and interesting books. During the lust two weeks about 50 parcels have been made up by myself and distributed. I find in all the forecastles that the men are delighted with their bundles. Papers on engineering, carpentering, wood-carving, navigation, etc., are also helpful!, as the men are able to improve their minds in their spare time. We have now formed a ladies' committee, and such useful articles of wear as comforters and woollen garments are being made, so that should any shipwrecked .mariners turn up in Auckland during the winter months we shall then be able to provide them With useful clothing. May I, therefore, make an appeal to all those kind friends who have spare pieces of cloth, wool, serge, etc., as the ladies on the committee are deft with the needle and knitting-pins. Akthcu P. Cowie, . Seamen's Missioner, Missions to Seamen (London), care of Diocesan Church Office, Shortland-street, Auckland.
