The vicious hawk is generally regarded as the settler's enemy, but it is now suggested that he might be used to good purpose in the destruction of small birds. A Manawatu farmer, who is growing a small quantity of Cape bailey, the other day noticed small birds hard at work pulling up the crop. He varied their diet with some poisoned wheat, which he scattered around the field. Next day dead birds were lying about in all directions, and hawks were preying upon them. The farmer is delighted. with the result, because other small birds were frightened to encroach upon the territory thus taken possession of by the hawks. He gays he formerly looked upon the hawk as a useless member of the feathered tribe, but he has now changed his opinion.
