AMERICA'S FLEET.
CHINA SENDS AN INVITATION. By Telegraph.—Presß Association.—Copyright. Pekin, March 24. The Chinese Government has asked the United States Pacific licet to visit Nanking. THE AUSTRALIAN VISIT.
MORE THAN A COURTESY CALL.
Speaking in Melbourne last week, Mi*. Fisher (Leader of the Federal Labour party) said be could not but express his appreciation of the recent act of the Federal Prime Minister in inviting the President of the United states to allow, the American lieet to visit Australia. That act was statesmanlike, one that would redound to the credit" of Mr. Deakin, and one that would, ho believed, greatly benefit Australia. " Our American friend?," ho went on, " should be joined with us in the Southern Pacific in the event of trouble coming to the white rice. Then, with that little island of New Zealand lying between, the white people would have the protection of Australasia and the protection of i~e United States. Our destiny would be assured. (Applause.) Ho trusted that the visit of the fleet of the powerful United States, where they had their own troubles, would be more than one of courtesy. It would, he felt, be the beginning of a clearer understanding with a great nation, which was akin with us in idea.-, constitution, aims, language, and religion, and a protection to our race and civilisation." (.Cheers.)
