DROWNING FATALITIES.
_ ♦ — DEATH AT A FORD. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisbornk, Wednesday. A DROWNING fatality occurred in the Hangaroa River, about five o'clock last night, the victim being Thos. Rogers, a single man, of about 30 yea-re of age, and a native of Hobart. About the time stated Mr. Edgar Waliis was showing Rogers over the river at what is known as the bottom crossing, the one which is used when the river is in flood. Mr. Wallis escorted him over safely into shallow water and returned. On reaching the bank, Waliis looked round and saw Rogers working with his dog, which had got into difficulties on account of the swift current. His horse swerved round and got off the track, and Rogers, overbalancing, pulled the animal over a log, and both horse and rider we're washed into a hole. Waliis went to the unfortunate man's assistance, and Was carried under. Upon rising, he saw that Rogers had disappeared. Wallis saw him rise further down the river, but before he could reach him the man disappeared again, and was lost to sight. Rogers was 4 wearing an oilskin coat, which probably interfered with his freedom when lie got. info difficulties. MAORI'S FALL FROM A BRIDGE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] VVairoa (H. 8.), Wednesday. A. young native named Karaikano, aged 26, fell from the Wairoa bridge to-day, near the drawspan, and was drowned. The body has been recovered.
