SWIMMING.

The annual swimming sports in connection with the Misses Burns' College at Mount Eden" will be held in the Albert-street baths on Monday evening. ' Judging by the previous exhibitions seen at these carnivals, the gathering should be successful. The Misses Burns are swimming enthusiasts, and an. endeavour is being made to provide funds for the erection of a bath at tho school. It is, therefore, to be hoped that, there will bo a good attendance at the gala on Monday evening. 'The application of the Wftitemata Club to the City Council for permission to erect flooring on top of the dressing boxes, to provide increased seating accommodation, has been referred to the Streets Committee of the ■ Council, to report upon. It is to lie hoped the Council will do something, and at once.

Th& tenth annual swimming carnival of tho Auckland City Schools,; which was to have been held last evening, has been, postponed to Friday evening, 20th instant. In addition to the usual schoolboys' championships, a ?2yds open handicap will be contested. -

The Wellington centre of the N.Z.A.S.A. will hold their annual carnival in Thorndon Baths.-Wellington, on Saturday next. Four schoolboys' championships will be contested, also the 100 yds and 440 yds Wellington Centra championships, New Zealand water polo championships, a SOyds and 100 yds interclub handicap, and other events. Entries close on Monday. I have forwarded a number of entry forms to the Auckland centre secretary.

With the improvement in swimming mailers generally in Auckland, this season the local committee are pursuing a. wise course in endeavouring to secure a visit to Auckland of some of the Southern, cracks for their gala, to be held in the Graving Dock, on Saturday afternoon, the 28th instant. Frevberg, of Wellington, and F. E. Dodge, and II Rich, of Canterbury, who have all won provincial and New Zealand championships, havo been invited, and , their meeting with Champion, the local crack, should be worth witnessing, and with favourable conditions there should Ik- a large attendance. These .swimmers will probably all be in Napier for the Dominion championships, and the intention is to get them to come on to Auckland.

A\e will be well represented at the championship meeting!, in Napier in scratch and handicap events. \phampion will represent Auckland in all the scratch races, and in his present form most of the honours should come hack- to Auckland. Freyberg, of Wellington, I am told, is in good form, and swimming finely, and if this is so, he will be Champion's strongest opponent, though I do not think he is the equal of the local man. About, a dozen other swimmers are proceeding to Napier, and these will compete in the handicaps. 'die Kings College annua! swimming spoils brought forth some good - competitions, and it might be said an all round improvement was shown by the boys, A remarkably tine performance was put up by Wilson in winning the senior « up, which places him in the position of undisputed college champion. Wilson -vas easily first, securing 20 points, Hells by being second! with 12 points, and Simon third, with sixpoints. Wilson won the 36yds, 108 yds, and 216 yds events, a fine performance or a boy The junior cup was won by Taint, with 15 points, who was also easily first, Buchanan being second with 7 points, and Pierce a close third with 6 points. Taino secured third in the 36yds, and first in the lOSyds and longdive events. Walker won the boys' championship under .10. years of age, Colbeck being second. The Y.M.C.A. Club held a very successful carnival on Tuesday evening, and is to be congratulated on its initial effort of the season. With good entries and tine racing all the evening the large crowd were thoroughly satisfied. The handicapping was very tine, 'uid close finishes were invariably the rule, while in the final of the interclub handicap, the first three swimmer* wore placed equal—a. very rare evoiU. The officials all worked well, and all are to be congratulated, especially the enthusiastic lion, sec., Mr. W. H. Patterson, who has infused new life into the club. It is to be hoped the club will persevere in the same way they have I>ecn going, and follow the lead of the Waitemata Club in holding further carnivals.

The hundred yards championship was decided at,the carnival, five facing "the post. From a good start the field kept together' for the first 72 yards, the spectators growing very enthusiastic. From this on, however, Champion drew nwny, and won by » yard and a-half from Stewart, who swam a remarkably fine raw, and showed himself to lie an improving swimmer. Ivernoft was a good third. Champion made an attempt on the New Zealand record, but he failed by the narrow margin of a fifth of a second doing the distance in 65 I-ss, which is also one-fifth outside the standard lime.

A telegram from Wellington yesterday slated that B. C. Freyhorg swam 440 yds in 6m. 8s at. To Aio baths. If successful at the championship meeting, to be held at .Napier this month, Freyb.-rg will accept the invitation to compete fit the Auckland sports later on. fie i.- in champion form at present . j GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPORTS.
