FIRES.

FOUR SHOPS DESTROYED AT ', MARTON. ; DEFECTIVE WATER SUPPLY. [bt teleghai'H.— association.] MajitON, Wednesday. The second big fire within the hist month broke out at Marten about two o'clock today, totally destroying J. M. Nicol's shop, refreshment-rooms, and bakehouse ; B. G. Goobers fruit and produce premises; J. Milligan's crockery and ironmongery shop, and Max Bornhold's jewellery shop and dwelling. The water supply was cut off temporarily, and when the brigade got to work Nicol's building, where the fire started, was a mass of flames. The brigade worked splendidly and saved several adjoining buildings. The insurances are as followsNicol's stock, £250 in the Alliance Office, and the shop, owned by Mrs. Nicol, sen., £300 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office; Goebel's Etock, £50 in the New Zealand Office, and the shop, owned by Mr. A. H.Sutcliffe, £200 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office : Milligan's stock, £250 in the Commercial Union, and the shop, owned by Mr. A. H. fnteliffe, £500 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe Office; Bornhold's stock and furniture, £550 in the State Office, and the shop and dwelling, £400 in the New Zealand Office.

BLAZE AT NAPIER. " [by TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Wednesday. A fire broke out about 9.30 o'clock this evening in the upstais portion of the pre-, mises -of J. M. Phillips, confectioner, Hastings-street. The fire hud a good hold when it was discovered, and Phillips' place was gutted, very little of his furniture and stock being saved. Messrs. Rice (confectioner), Prebble (fruiterer), and Hannah (boot importers), all had their stocks injured by water, while the upper portion of Rice's shop was gutted. Phillips' furniture, stock, and shop fittings, etc., were insured for £400 and his household furniture for £100, but his loss will be about £700 over tliat amount. Mr. Phillips and his family were away at an entertainment when the fire broke out. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. OUTBREAK AT ASHBURTON. [BY TELEGRAM.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ASHBURTON, Wednesday. A new five-roomed house at Hampstead, valued at £260, owned by Mrs. Susannah Tasker, and occupied by J. Reddington, was completely destroyed by fire hist night. Nothing was saved. The house was insured for £163 in the State Office, and the furniture for £75 in the Norwich Union Company. *..
