THE SLAUGHTERING ACT.
NOVEL CAST. AT GISBORNE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisbohne, Friday. A cask of considerable interest to persons operating under the .Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900. was brought before the Court to-day by Inspector W. Miller, of tli*.! Agricultural Department, when John Allen, or Ormond, was charged with a breach of sections 17 and 32. It appears thai the defendant, who pleaded guilty, had been slaughtering on a small scale within the Gisborno Borough abattoir district at other than a registered abattoir, and retailing the meat in competition with licensed butchers. The case is understood to be the first of the kind in the colony. His Worship pointed out that the Act had been in force since 1901. The maximum penalty was £50, but ho would take into consideration that it was the first case, and a fine of £1, and costs £2 4s, was imposed.
