At the Supreme Court to-day the grand jury found true bills in three cases presented, and two trials were completed. In one case, Henry Clifford was convicted of the theft of a swag, and having three previous convictions was sentenced to six months' hard labour, following four months' imprisonment while he was awaiting trial. In a case of forgery and uttering at Methven, an alibi was proved, and the prisoner was discharged. A case of assault with intent remains. INVERCARGILL. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] * Invercargill, Tuesday. The Supreme Court opened to-day. Mr. Justice Chapman said he was very pleased to be able to congratulate the grand jury on the absence of crime from this large district. The calendar was an exceptionally small one, and it seemed to him, in comparison with former times, to show a marked diminution in proportion to the population. There were only threo cases—-alleged cattle stealing, sending a threatening letter, and false registration of a birth.
