R.M.S. OROYA.
NARROW ESCAPE FROM DISASTER. 4 By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. London, June 3. Later details show that when off the Portuguese coast the R.M.s. Oroya on her recent voyage from Australia encountered a strong wind, which hindered her progress. Just after she rounded Ushant lighthouse a sudden and extensive vibration and the stoppage of » the i: engines alarmed some of the more timid passengers, who feared that something had been struck. They were promptly reassured, but had the breakdown occurred a little earlier in the night the steamer would have drifted on to the rocks. As things happened the wind carried her seaward. Several vessels in the vicinity offered assistance, -but this was declined.
