WAIHI EXTENDED.

RECENT LOW LEVEL DEVELOP- ■■ MENTS. j, [By TEKGBAPH.—OWN CORBESPONDENT.] 1 V Waihi, Monday, y Driving on No. 2 lode at the No. 4 level i of the Waihi Extended mine, the extreme 1 cap of which was intersected recently at a I point some 120 ft from the shaft, in a south- , westerly direction, has now: been followed , along ", its course for just [on 25ft. At the point of intersection about 9in of stone was exposed, and the reef has now opened up to '. about 2ft. in the present face, where it is ! more settled and, compact, and on the whole i shows an :improvement on the level above. [ It is the intention of the management to , continue driving along the course of the ore ', body with the object of connecting with the No. 1 winze, and when this connection is • made better ventilation will be given, and i the manager will then be in a position to ■, carry out other necessary development . works.-" The winze in question is down 140 ft from the No. 3 level, and the No. 3 winze is down 150 ft on a strong body of ore be- [ tween the Nos. 3 and 4- levels.: ■ The com- ; pany have a block of ground 170 ft in depth, ' with a length of 400 ft, and as the Grand ' Junction • Company are now taking a big ■ proportion of their crushing dirt from the : No. lode, some little distance south-west ' of the Extended boundary, this points to the ; probability, of an extensive stretch of pay ' ore being taken out between the Nos. 3 and ' 4 levels of the Extended when the development work at the present lowest level has ■ been sufficiently advanced to enable stoping operations to be .commenced. ~ So far, the - work carried out at No. 4 level has demon- ; strated 1 that the No. 2 reef lives -past the '•-. shaft, and it is therefore reasonable to as- '> sume that a much larger, stretch of the ore • body will be met.with at No. 5 level. ; The > reef has steadily gained strength with depth, : and it is to be expected that when cross- > cutting is commenced it will be found to be • considerably wider at the No. 4 level than ; was the case at No.- 3; also, that it, will be i still wider when met with at the next level : going l down (No. 5). [ [ : ,: • I i Generally speaking, it may be said that > development work in the Waihi Extended is ; being pushed forward systematically, and • with all possible despatch, while as far as 5 the prospects of the mine are concerned they t have certainly not at any time looked l brighter than at present. % t r ' ...,; ["—. ' [by TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.]' 5 • Thames, Monday. p ..'" ■.' . ■ ' ■'■ ,■. ■■'■ ■ At the low level the crosscut to inter- ■ sect the main reef has been extended a distance of 31ft past the drive on the new reef. The ' country in the face has now become very hard, and appears to be entering into a blue bar formation at an angle ,in : -the; western: drive on the reef, which is now in 33ft from the crosscut. . The reef has increased in size to about 2ft, but there is no improvement in the J quality, of the quartz as yet. ■:';■ The sur- ' face i level is now [ in a total ■: distance of 1 166 ft, and is some distance past the point • where it was expected to intersect the reef, • which has evidently changed its underlie, - and as this level was heading to cut the I reef at a long .angle the course has now - been altered to a right angle with the reef, 5 so as to reach it sooner. It may be in- - tersected now at any time, and should be ' to hand during the coming week. i '..' " : ■ : ■■■' ■""■ _ _ _ ■■■■"'-' MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. J i Moanataiari : Extended (June 1): ''During the , week the rise on the reef from the back of the . surface level has been, put up a further distance of 10ft. It is underlying very flat, but is a well- • defined body ; of ore, and although no gold -has - been seen in the quartz it seems .to be improving, os gold can be obtained from the walk by ' pounding and washing 3 Kuranui (June 1): In the intermediate level - the, f drive on the Shotover leader has been exI tended sft, and is now penetrating a nice channel of firm sandstone. ■ Two or three small qudrtz stringers containing very nice-looking minerals f have come in from the* footwall side of the drive ) and may junction with the main leader further ahead. Footwall leader 2 stope east has been extended Bft, making,a total' of 34ft east: of the r rise. The leader, is now? lying away from the. old '; workings ilat, i eo: r t'hattit;may*jro ahead in , this stope for some distance "yet. ■'■ The leader; is from 2in to 3in wide and still carries some favourable minerals. We have started No. 2 stope west s of the rise and have now driven lift. The leader ; has been rather disturbed by a. break crossing it at a .long angle, but wo are now getting into firmer country and the leader is improving in ■ appearance as we advance. * .. • '-■ , Victoria (June 1): -The work during the week i has been, confined to cutting through the reef at ; No. 4 level. The reef shows a width of 12ft. As ' nothing of any importance has been seen I have '■ decided to suspend work here for the time being and start a' stope along the back of the level seaward of the break and rise on the lead where gold was seen last week. v '"■;■.'- New Maratoto (May 31): .For the week ending May 30 51 tons of ore have been broken from the[stepes over the intermediate level and transported to : the battery. Owing to the difficulty of getting tilling into the stopes going south we started at the beginning of the week to put ,up a rise to the surface, so as to fill these stopes to prove tho value of the ground overhead. This rise is now up a distance of 20ft and there was some fair dirt making its appearance yesterday. In the battery 10 stamps have been running for a - total of 61 hours, crushing .49 tons of quartz. A r sample from the lip of the box assayed 19s lid. j Total quantity of hot water squeezed amalgam on • hand, 630z. [ Thames (May 31): The main crosscut has been advanced 15ft during the week. A small quartz " formation from 2in to 3in thick crossed the face, • carrying a little white sandstone on each side of - it, but beyond that there was blue rock again. . It is not so hard as it was formerly. ' There are more, seams and crossheads making ; through it, " and possibly a few feet further driving will see - us through the hard bar. > ["' ''' _____^_nma«__—•
