A WHITE ELEPHANT.
VANCOUVER CARGO SERVICE..
[BY TELEGRATH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Dunedin, Saturday. . The £10,000 expended by the colony "on a* subsidised cargo service to. Vancouver takes on the look of a white elephant more and more every day. The Star has ascertained that after a year's trading the aggregate of the cargoes carried from this end would only fill one moderate-sized Home steamer, while the cargoes coming from Vancouver would do about the same. The precise figures are 4500 tons inward to New Zealand, and 4500 tons outward. ■'.■' . " '. .* ' ''" '"
There is a further feature. Of the total 9000 tons inward and outward, it appears that only 3000 tons came to or went out from New Zealand. The other. 6000 tons represented Fijian, Australian, and United States goods, all carried on our money.
