I Although the great commercial interests of the United States are mostly Republican, 'and are therefore more or lcs3 bound to support President Roosevelt, a stro..g disj like has been aroused against him amongst the great financiers of that country. They dislike President Roosevelt because they fear him. They regard him as an incorruptible, public-spirited man, who would like, if he could, by strong administration, to rescue tho United States from the tyrrany of the financial trusts and monopolies, and they therefore accuse him of creating class distinction and of fomenting an intense un-American class hatred. They accuse him of causing discontent with existing conditions, a discontent which will only disappear '• when the soup kitchens bring tho proletariat to its senses." They accuse him of shaking confidence in tne stability _ of American institutions by hasty and illadvised attacks upon corporations and their methods. They say that his speeches about corporate dishonesty aro unfair, that he uses the "big stick" without discrimination against business interests, that ho supports
labour against capital, and that the labour classes of the United States, owing to his dangerous meddling, aro clamouring for all sorts of concessions, to tho detriment of; business and of the shareholders. Owing to him, they say, the spirit of socialism is rampant, business is unsettled, and " the old American spirit of fairness and commonsense" has gone.; Millions of people in the . States now think that the corporations are guilty, and that all rich men are unconvicted ciiminals." ; He is said to be too impulsive, reckless, ill-balanced, too ignorant of business, tod profoundly conceited, too much a believer in brute force, and violence. They say that he is a socialist of the kind that means well, but who "smokes a cigarette in a powder magazine." Finally, - he is stubborn, self-opinionated, careless of law, and fond of theatrical effects. He leaps before- ho looks, and his ideas of centralisation threaten the autonomy of the States.
