The welcome social tendered to the Rev. R. Taylor, the newly-appointed Methodist minister to Manukau Circuit, was" well at- | tended, the church being well filled. The I chair was taken by Mr. T. W. Phillips, and a good programme of musical items was | provided. Song's were contributed by tho Misses Robinson, Messrs. ,G. Calloway, 1). Ronnie, and J. W. Andrew, recitations by Miss Bell and Miss M. Farnsworth. Addresses of welcome were given by Mr. Havill (Baptist Church), Adjutant McCormick (Salvation Army), Mr. Stringer (for tho trustees), Mr. Douglass, Mr. V. Stringer (Christian Endeavour), Mr. H. Andrew (Sunday-school), Messrs. Farnsworth, Bycroft (East Tamaki and Flat Bush), and tho Rev,. A.; Doull (Presbyterian). Mr. Taylor, in reply, expressed pleasure at meeting many old friends, whom ho had mot in other circuits. Refreshments wore handod round. A letter 'of apology tor non-attend-anco was received from the Rev. H. Mason. The plans of the new Sunday-school were considered at the meeting of the trustees on Thursday afternoon, when it was decided that, owing to the cost of building exceeding expectations, it was inadvisable to proceed with the scheme until the building fund had a larger amount to its credit. Tho programme of the Otara Mutual Improvement Society on Tuesday was much enjoyed by the large number present. Readings wore given from standard authors, tho following being drawn upon: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Dickens, Thackeray, Kingsley, and Scott. The members who took part wero -Misses Binney, Maoky, Caruth, and Mellsopp, and Messrs. W. and J. O'Hara and S. Ferguson. The local lodgo: of the 1.0. G.T. had an open meeting on Friday, '.which' was largely attended ;by members of the - lodge and friends. Brother G. Havill, L.D., presided. J Pianoforte solos were contributed .by Mrs. Frazer and Miss Robinson, And a violin selection by Miss.Moore, while Miss ' rendered a mandolin, solo. ,-- Songs were given by Mr. Simmons, a .visitor from H.M.s. Powerful, and Messrs. G. Galloway, H. Andrew, and G. Crow. Mr. Havill gave a [ humorous reading, and Mr. Schofield exhibited some sleight-of-hand tricks for the amusement of the juveniles; Addresses wero given by the chairman and Brother H. Ross, urging the claims' of good-templary to support. A canvass was made in the room to secure new members .for the lodge, the officers and members beinjj determined that Nil Desperandum lodge shall take premier place in the competition for the silk banner promised by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds to the lodge securing the most new members in the quarter. - A number of names of intending members were given; .' Tho annual social and prize distribution in the Sunday-school connected with Holy Trinity Church took' place on Thursday night, the Rev. H. Masion being in the chair. , A large number of lantern slides, illustrating a trip to London and the places seen on the way, were shown, and created much interest. .The fortnightly meeting, of the Road Board took place on Thursday. Mr. J. Todd (chairman) presided,. and there were also present: Messrs. Brady Absolum, and Lippiatt. Tenders for supply and carting scoria required by the Board, also for one or two horse teams, were considered. The tenders of J. H. McAnulty and J. Millar respectively were: accepted at the following prices:— Rough scoria, Is 2d per cubic yard; fine stone, Is sid; stone, Is ljjd; blue stone spauls, 2s 6d:_ one-horse team, 12s 6d; twohorse team, los per day. It was decided to procure and distribute among the ratepayers 500 copies of the new sanitary bylaws passed by the Board. The question oi wages paid to casual hands employed by the Board was raised, and it was decided that 7s per day be the maximum. Letters were read from the residents in Churchstreet, tho secretaries of the croquet and tennis clubs, and the residents on Mangerc Road, asking for the formation of footpaths and roadways in the vicinity of the properties in which they are interested. The matter of improving the corner at tho junction of the Ma,ngcre and Great South Roads at the Nixon monument was brought up, and it was resolved to fence in the monument and . the green adjoining, to ; plant shrubs, and provide seats. Tho second of the tennis club's socials took place on Friday, and was largely patronised. The hall was handsomely decorated with flags and coloured lanterns. Messrs. W. Sheppard and A. Waddell were the joint secretaries, and the music was supplied by Messrs. Levy and Bagstromm. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the: ladies' .committee, assisted by Mesdames Hall, Brooke, and Whitely, and Misses Graham, Dam, L. Morrin, and Hall. TfTe takings amounted to nearly £10.
