LINOTYPE OPERATORS'
AGREEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION".]
Wellington, Friday. At the Arbitration Court it was announced that the city employers concerned in the typographical dispute had arrived at a settlement with the union in regard to employees engaged in linotype work.
Mr. Pirani, in reply to a statement by the secretary of the union, disclaimed any intention of upsetting this agreement ; all he required was that the settlement should not be extended to machine compositors in the country. As a matter of fact, the men in the country were in a much better position than the employees in the city.
. The Court ratified the agreement referred to above. It provides for payment by time or piecework, a day's work to consist of not more than seven hours, and wages to be at the rate of £5 10s per week for day operators and £3 16s for night operators. Provision is made foi employment of probationer operators at the rate of £2 10s per week for day work and £2 16s per week for night work, or Is 6d per hour for day and Is 9d per hour for night work.
The agreement is binding on seven firms in the city.
That portion of the union's iemands relating to other branches of the trade will be dealt with by the Court on June 25.
