THEFT FROM A RAILWAY STATION.

Masterton, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court, to-day, H. J. Johnson, storeman at the railway station, was charged with the theft of two boxes of tobacco, valued at £10 10s, the property of the New Zealand Government; and 0. R. Petersen, dealer, was charged with receiving tobacco from Johnson knowing the same to be stolen. Evidence went to show that the tobacco, which was consigned by a merchant firm to Eketahuna, was kept in the railway goods shed nearly a fortnight. . Johnson , then , gave it to .Petersen, who sold it to a local tobacconist for £7 17s 6d, both of the accused dividing the proceeds. Two days later. Petersen brought the tobacco back and returned it to the railway station. The police in the meantime received certain information which led them to question Petersen, and he made a statement confessing his guilt.
Petersen pleaded guilty, and was , committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Johnson pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.
