Strange as it may seem, there are hundreds of wild donkeys in the far north of South Australia, which have become as great a nuisance to pastoralists in some districts as kangaroos used to be in others. Years ago, when the; Beltana Company introduced the long-eared creatures into the mountainous regions of he Paralalia, Mount Lyndhurst, and Pudanamutana station properties. a number of them were allowed to run wild for the purpose of acclimatising them and increasing the herds. The animals have become so numerous that they are now a pest. Consequently at intervals they are proclaimed unbranded animals under the Crown Lands Act, and as such are put up for sale by auction under the auspices of the Government. Two years ago the last sale of the unowned asses was held, but the purchaser evidently was not successful in catching many, because the number has increased to such an extent that lit is again necessary to hold a sale. The jranges in which the donkeys breed and live die exceedingly rough, and it is a difficult task to catch them.
