PILFERING IN AUCKLAND HARBOUR.
MORE CONSTABLES PROMISED.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
I , Wellington, Thursday. | The Minister for Justice was interviewed yesterday by Mr. W. J. Napier, a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, in support of an agitation by that body for the appointment of water police in Auckland. Mr. .Napier explained that thefts from vessels and the local wharves had become of frequent occurrence, and he urged that property -would not be sufficiently protected unless the old water police system was reverted to, and the harbour patrolled by means of a motor launch.
The Minister said he could not see his way to agree to the appointment of water police, but. lie promised to increase the number of constables doing duty on the water front, and place the men in charge of a, sergeant with special knowledge of the class l of work required to be done by the police in connection, with the shipping.
