AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.
A meeting of the council of the Auckland Institute was held in tho Museum Buildings on Wednesday afternoon. There were prosent: Mr. E. V. Miller (president), Professor H. W. Segar and Messrs. H. Haines, J. A. Pond, J. Reid, J. H. Upton, and T. |F. Oheeseman (secretary).
New 1 Member: On the motion of the chairman Mr. E. Clarke was elected a mem- j ber.
Collection of Kauri Gum:/A letter was read from the Hon. E. Mitchelson offering to deposit in. the Auckland Museum two! large show eases containing his" collection,'■ of kauri gum, recently exhibited at the Ohristchurch Exhibition and at the Auckland Agricultural Society's Winter Show. The collection was a largo and valuable one, and the increasing scarcity of the article, made it improbable that a better one could ever be formed. - It was agreed to accept Mr. Mitchelson's offer with the special I thanks of the council.
j Books Presented; Mr. H. Shaw, of Fonsonby, wrote presenting to the library a. copy of* Priehard's "Physical History of Mankind/' 5 vols., with 2 vols, plates, and McKenqey's " Indian Tribes of North America," 2 vols.,' with 2 vols, folio plates. Both works were' well-known authorities. The cordial thanks of the institute were voted to Mr. Shaw for his acceptable presentation.
i Report of Library Committee The Library Committee presented a report, rejcommending that in addition to the revenue of £96 10s available from the Maekechnie library bequest a vote of 50 should be | made from ■.the general funds, of the institute for the purchase of books and periodicals and for binding, and that a' special grant of £20 be voted towards the expanse of forming a card catalogue of the library and of obtaining the necessary cabinets, cards, etc. "The committee also recommended the purchase of 60 volumes of -books at an estimated cost of about £50. * The report was adopted. Government Grant: It was announced] that the Government grant of £660 had! been paid over and that £500 of it would be available,: for additions of a permanent character to the Museum. After discussion it was resolved that a committee, to consist of the president, Professor Segar, Messrs. Pond, Stewart, and Upton, be appointed to consider the matter and - to report to the next meeting of the council. ■ Finances: The secretary submitted a return showing' the estimated revenue and expenditure for the current year.
