PROHIBITION.

1 Sir/—Will you allow- me through .the i medium of the columns of your esteemed i journal to suggest to the propaganda which is known as the Prohibitionist that the practice of disseminating through the post addressed to various individuals literature which is purely of a party or, " factional " i nature, being admittedly tho "apology" or , defence of their distinctive views; an eulogy of their apprehension of State equity and an interpretation of morals peculiar to' asceticism: I say that this practice is novel • and unique' and is -• justly resented as im-j • pertinence by those who are quite established i \ in contrary views. This sort of thing differs! from political canvassing, holding as it does j religion "in solution," which is generally; , so handled as to'serve a particular ' view. ', There is no accounting for the central ideas . which have generated and inspired religious and political factions in our past English i history, and which the Throne and Consti- , tut-ipn have been shaken by, but ; have thrown off and .survived. This extremist! , policy aims at, marches to, and "will be satisfied with nothing less than a despotic : position in the Legislature. ■ Their "ulti- , malum : " is -,tho logical sequence ,of their absorbing idea. Unlawful law is paradoxical, but unless the country is kept aroused to the "political" meaning of prohibition it will ere long be found clanking its chains. Liberty and Justice.
