Chinese bandits have destroyed the German mission station at Licnchau, but the local authorities saved the lives of the missionaries. German and British gunboats are proceeding to Pakhoi. - ! A serious rising has taken place at Wong-kong, 45 miles south-east of j Canton, and many of the Chinese j officials have been killed, but the Europeans have not been harmed. j Chinese troops have been sent to the j district. The rising at Wong-kong is attributed to increases in taxation. There are 30,000 rebels under arms in the vicinity of Swatow. Tokio, May 2S. The newspapers of Tokio are uneasy lest China's policy of seeking to recover her national rights by ! shaking off foreign supervision should create amongst the Chinese ! people an anti-foreign mood and (cause them to get beyond official control.
