DEFENDING HIS MOTHER. At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, 8.M., James Charles South, a seaman,, for : whom-Mr. A. E. Skelton appeared, pleaded guilty to -assaulting George H. Mastcrman, by striking him with his clenched fist.

Evidence was called to the effect that the accused, undei, the impression, that his. mother had' Keen insulted,'struck the complainant- in the face, cutting his lip and knocking one of his teeth out. The complainant denied that he had insulted Mrs. South. ■■-.- - " • '

Mr. Kettle said ho thought that South was under the impression that- his mother had been, insulted, and had defended her. However, he was not justified in taking the law in his.own' hands,-and would be convicted and discharged. "HIS LAST CHANCE." Thomas Webster, -an oysterraan, who had been convicted of vagrancy, and remanded for sentence, was brought 1 before the Court. Mr. W. E. Hacketfc appeared for the accused. ■'■■■' * '■■ : Mr. Kettle said he had decided to give Webster his last chance, and convicted and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. MISCELLANEOUS. A young man named John Sharp was remanded to appear at Pukekohe, on June 5, on a charge of stealing a quantity of goods, valued at £8. from the dwelling of Arthur Boylan, of Tuakau, For using obscene language in Federalstreet, on Saturday last, Frederick Watson was fined 20s and costs, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Mr. Kettle granted a separation order against. James R. White-law, on the application of his wife, Ethel Whitelaw. Mr. Brookfield appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Singer for the defendant. Edward Co&tar was ordered to contribute 2s 6d per week towards the support of Margaret G. Costar, a near relative of his. Two first offenders were each fined 5s and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment for drunkenness. Matthew Leonard was ordered to pay 15s per week towards the support of his wife. He was also prohibited for 12 months. An application for a separation order against Leonard was adjourned, sine die.
