COLLISION IN THE GULF.
BARQUE MANUREWA AND ; SCOW VINDEX, . i
BOTH VESSELS DAMAGED.
A somewhat serious collision occurred in the gulf early yesterday morning between the barque Munurewa and the auxiliary scow Vindex. The barque was inward bound from Edithburg, South Australia, with a cargo of salt and bark, and the Vindex was coming to Auckland from the coast with a cargo of cattle. " ' The vessels came • into collision when about 2£ miles outside Tiritiri, between two a.m. and three a.m. The Vindex had her mainmast carried away, and th© Manurewa lost her main topsail yard, main top-gallant yard, and a quantity of her head gear. After getting clear the Vindex came on to Auckland under her - oil : engine, and the barque spoke the Union Company's steamer Atua, bound to Auckland from the Islands, and asked Captain Hutton, the master of the steamer, to send out a tugboat. The pilot steamer Kuaka, with Pilot Sainty on board, which was anchored in the gulf, went out to the Manurewa shortly after daylight, and asked Captain Nillson if any assistance was required, but received a reply in the negative. • Shortly after the arrival of the Atua at Auckland the Devonport Ferry Company's tug Durham was despatched, and picked the barque up off Tiritiri and towed her into port, last night. The fact of the collision has been reported to the Collector of- Customs at Auckland, and the matter will probably be the subject of a nautical inquiry. ' " ; v
