A SLY-GROG CASE.
WITNESSES UNDER ARREST! [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Invidrcargill, Monday. The adjourned case against Margaret McAuliffe, proprietress of the Shamrock boardinghouse, charged with unlawfully selling liquor on April 1, was begun this afternoon, and concluded to-night. Mr. Solomon, of Dunedin, appeared for the Department. " ■ Evidence was' given by two. witnesses Hollman and Lawson, who previously absconded and were brought back under arrest, as to the sale of whisky to them and another person They stated under cross-ex-amination that while they were in the cells awaiting the hearing of another charge preferred against them they told the police of the sale of the liquor to them on April 1, and were asked by the police to visit the Shamrock boardinghouse and invite the accused to sell them liquor again. They accordingly visited the house, but could only purchase soft" drinks. Two other witnesses and the accused denied the sale.
Defendant admitted that she had been convicted in August, 1905, of unlawful sale of liquor, but said she was not guilty. The decision of the Bench was reserved.
