INSPECTION OF FLAGSHIP.
The flagship Powerful will -be open for public inspection to-morrow afternoon. Steamers will leave the ferry tee 4 for the flagship during the afternoon from • a-quai l ; tor to two o'clock, running at frequent in l tervals. . ' . ' •
The ■ Union Company's . steamer > Wairaha has been busily engaged in coaling' the warships during the -week, with ' Westport coal. The Powerful took on board 2000 tons on Wednesday,; the Encounter ,900 tons on Thursday, and the Pioneer. about the same quantity yesterday. No records were put up as compared with .the last coaling operations ,of the . squadron in Auckland, but'' some smart work was accomplished.
The Prometheus, Pioneer, and Encounter have completed their big. gun practice in the gulf, : and the flagship will go out into the gulf next week to carry -oat her firing. ' •'V , -
! So far there has been a good response I for .recruits for the navy in .Auckland,! and | any . further applicants can apply to Lieutenant Pickering, on board H.M.s. Pioneer, this morning, leaving by th© warship's steam launch, from Quay-street Jetty, at a-quarter past nine. Applicants must produe© their, birth certificate, and also references .as to character covering three years prior to application for enrolment.
