CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES' WAGES.
At the monthly meeting of the Auckland East branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation, held on Thursday night, the president (Mr. G. L. l'ea cocke) reported that he had mado inquiry as to the rate of wages paid to tho City Council employees. It appeared that the Council workmen were all permanent employees, with no broken time on account of bad weather. There were a certain number of men who received 7s per day who wore exclusively employed as street swwwrs and cleaner*. At the waterworks the ordinary workmen received is bet a day all the year round, but v.hen they were working and camping at Wuitiikerei on special work these wages wore raised to 8s 6d a. day. Men who were employed at pipe-laying were paid 9s a dav. lTie engine-drivers nt the destructor had recently had their wages raised from Ps to 9s 6d, and stokers from Cs to 8s 6d a day. Dustcart drivers, who formerly received 7s ed a day. now received Ss «d". hi the engineer's department, nine men received 10s a day, two being men who might be clawed as rough carpenters. Carters driving a single horse sot £2 5s a week, which was more than the Arbitration Court award, and drivers of two-horse teams received the wages awarded by the Court. Stone-crusher labourers got 7s 6d a day. After discussion as to casual lalx>i.ir, it was decided, on the motion of the president, "That, a letter be written to the City Council, urging them to pay their casual employees the sarn" wages as contractors would have to nav for the same class of work."
