TREATMENT OF CONSUMPTIVES.

THE CAMBRIDGE SANATORIUM

[BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.]

Wellington, Thursday. A CORRESPONDENT to the Post inquires whether the authorities will permit a man to biTng his own tent to the grounds of the Cambridge Sanatorium (presuming that the institution has its full complement), and get the benefit of the medical attendance that is given to the ordinary patients. Dr. Mason, who returned the other day from a visit to Cambridge, states that the sanatorium is running up to its full capacity (about 60 patients). The grounds have as many people as they can take. It might be possible for a man to rent a little section in the settlement. There was plenty of medical attendance outside the sanatorium. He does not think that such an institution as the Cambridge one should be very much larger. The essence of the treatment is the personal supervision of patients, and there is no medical man or matron able to give the necessary amount of supervision if the number of patients exceeds very much 60. Dr. Mason's opinion is that when the various hospital boards have fixed up shelters for their sick no consumptive case capable of being treated will lack room. Wellington has the Otaki Sanatorium, and the Victoria Hospital, Nelson, Taranaki, Southland, and other places have made provision for consumptives; Christchurch lias laid the foundation-stone of a hospital, and Auckland has this matter under consideration.
