THE PIECE WORK SYSTEM.

REMARKS BY AN AUCKLAND LABOUR DELEGATE.

[BY TELEGRAPH. correspondent.]

Duntcdin, Thursday. Is* the course of the discussion at the Trades and Labour Conference to-day, on a motion affirming the desirability of amending the interpretation clause in the Conciliation and Arbitration .Act tc provide that in any trade or calling -where an industrial agreement or award is in force the term " worker" shall include any person who shall undertake to do any work without supplying at least 75 per cent, of the material required for such work or undertaking." Mr. Peake (Auckland) said that this subletting or piecework business amounted to sweating in Auckland. The contractors, he said, finding the labour market over-supplied, declined applications for wages work, but asked for quotations from the men for piecework, for window sashes, door frames, etc. The result was that the rate they paid per day for work - was more like 5s than 10s.
