MEDICAL INSPECTION IN SCHOOLS.
[BY telegraph.— own correspondent.]
Chkistchurch, Thursday. Tin; Hon. Geo. Fowlds, Minister for Educa-
tion, recently had schemes prepared for the*
medical inspection of school children. Probably legislative power will have to be ob-
tained before inspection can be made. Under one scheme the colony would be divided into four districts, and a medical officer would be appointed to each. The cost, with travelling expenses, would be about £3000 a year. The object would be to instruct teachers to some extent in the
diagnosis especially of contagious children's ailments. Mr. Fowlds doubts whether four medical men would be able to discharge the duties in all the outlying districts as well as in the chief towns. The alternative scheme is for proper inspection throughout the colony, ana would be a much more expensive one.
