ANNIVERSARY REGATTA.

A;• he Anniversary Regatta on the Waite- ' main yesterday yachtsmen had favourable conditions. It was one of the real ' i Waitemata " blue" days, when a bright : sky and a warm .sun show off to advantage 1 the beauties of the harbour. A strong easterly breeze brought with it a rough sea in the morning, and it was soon apparent that it was impossible to ue* oft the rowing events, and that portion of the programme was postponed The water '.aimed down somewhat with the turn of I the tide in the afternoon, s.nd it might I have been possible to vow off some of the j events then, but by this time the intendI ing competitors had scattered, and there j was no chance of getting them together again. The committee will, therefore, meet i to-morrow evening to arrange a. suitable J date, and an effort will be made to row off the country tours at six a.m. to-day, ill order to allow competing crews to return to their bores. As far as oarsmen were concerned, the Waitemata was in one of its rough moods, but for yachtsmen the day could scarcely have been better, and I the regatta was notable for first-class rue- j ing. The scene presented, once the racing ' liar] properly started, was a panorama Til ! to delight an artiest. In the stream lay th* \ fine Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria, which the company had lent as a flagship for the occasion, and it was dressed in bunting from stem to stern, and its decks were crowded with sightseers Over towards the city every vantage point on the wharves was occupied, a very large c-owd taking its stand on the outer tee of Queenstreet Wharf, and from the North Head down to Bean Rock, and up to opposite Northeote, the waterway wa.s dotted with I white-winged yachts and craft of all descriptions. Visitors who were on board the flagship grew quite enthusiastic over the beauty of the scene. The trading vessels' race was one of the most interesting events of the day. At the signal the six j ships spread sails and passed out in succession for Rangitoto channel, and as they rounded North Head the sight was very pretty. Hound about the flagship yachts of all sizes and descriptions flitted to and fro, motor and steam launches buzzed up and down, and motor boats ripped through the water in an awful hurry, apparently bound nowhere, and bent on getting there in the shortest possible time. On a lumbering old scow, moored opposite, the fun was fast and furious when the "greasy boom" competition stalled, and shouts of laughter greeted the luckless ones who staggered a moment, slipped, and then disappeared below, white the cigar and umbrella nicer, in that clumpy sea occasioned huge delight. The regatta was (mo of the beet tver held on the Wui tomato. Of course, the great majority of the crowd could not follow the racing* owing . to the time handicaps, but all could ad- ! mire the scone, and the seamanship dis- | played in the handling of the vessel*. ! The trading vessels' race was an event j of keen interest, especially so as the liand- | some prize offered had attracted a splendid ; entry. Karly in the afternoon the ships ! came up the channel and rounded into the : harbour, the finish being an exciting one. The leading boat, the Vesper, carried a Maori crew, and they gathered on deck and danced a wild haka as they passed the flagship, a contribution to the day's entertainment that was enjoyed by all who witnessed ii,. Loud applause greeted the Vesper, and the winnin;; boat, the Moonah, but tho crews of all deserved credit for the handling of their shins. The. other j great race was that for first-class yachts, in which six boats started, and there was j very great interest in this event, particu- ' larly in the finish between the Thelma and I I Ariki. The race between those two for ! first place was very keenly contested, and ' neither lost a chance all tit? war through. ! until the Ariki grounded slightly near j North Shore, die. Thelma winning with' Ariki second. The older type of boats made a good race in the cruising yacli.it class, and the half-decked centre-board yachts put up some good performances, and provided a fine iicld of 11 boats. There was a good race between .12 decked or haltdecked yachts, and the race for motor launches was one in which the public manifested a keen interest. On board the flagship everything pos- ! sible for the commit and convenience of visitors was done by Captain Waller and his officers, and Captain Waller, who has been all over the world, considered the trading vessels' and first-class yachts' races among the finest sights he had ever seen. j An energetic committee looked after the racing programme, and the starters deserved credit for getting all the. events I off to time. All worked over to the ] northern shore, Vixen being first about, followed closely by the other;. All sail* were ' drawing as the boats stood over into Judge's Kay. Albatross did not. stand so far into the bay as the others, and on the board across to the northern shore took the had. A good Mart was effected. Thelma having the best of it. Unfortunately, just off the Queen-Street Wharf, Matangi and Moan a fouled, the result ! being that the latter's bowsprit was carried away, and the boats bun? together tor some ■ minutes before they got clear. Moan a was thus out of the race, and was towed to iter moorings, Matangi losing fully sm. by the i accident. Rainbow worked the southern I shore and the others the northern i shore. Thelma was first round the squadron J mark, and soon had her ballon topsail out. ! with Ariki closely following, which set her j leading jib. On the beat, out to the channel j mark Ariki came up on Thelma. the others falling astern. Up to the squadron buoy I Thelma improved her position. Spinnakers j were soon all out, and the mark at Chelsea ; was rounded in the game order. Kotiri soon worked up into second position, and made a deadly " go " of it with Rangatira, only about half-a-minute separating the two boats as they passed the flagship on the first round.
