NEW ZEALAND POWER BOAT ASSOCIATION.

The New Zealand Power Boat Association held two races on .Saturday afternoon, and the events created a ...real deal of interest. The s.s. Pitoitoi acted as flagship, which was the starting point for the race-. Messrs. W. S. Whitley (commodore), William C. Robinson (secretary), and R. Whitley were the officers of tin: day. There was a strong easterly breeze blowing, and the tide was in strong flood, with a lumpy sea during the progress of the races. The first race was for launches over seven knots .Tiud under 10 knots, the prize being the cup presented by the Standard Gas Engine Company, of San Francisco, through Mr. J. J. Craig. New Zealand agent, for the company. Tho other race was for launches under seven knots, the prize being a trophy presented by Messrs. E. Porter and Co. The following are the details: — Standard Gas Engine Cup. Course: 30 knots. From flagship round pile beacon off Chelsea; round Motutapu and Rangitoto, •keeping those islands on tho port side; thence round white buoy off Point Resolution, finishing off the "flagship. The entries wero: Regal, Kapai, Alleyne, Emerald. Geisha, Tawhiri, Ripple, Kaitere, Standard, Camper, Shadow, Ferro. Geisha and Ferro did not compete. The times of starting ■were: Regal, 2h. : Kapai, 2h. 2m. 305.; Alleyne, 2h. 5m.; Emerald, 21). Bm. 30s. (50s.> late; Tawhiri, 2h. 14s. 30s. (30,; late); Ripple. 2h. 22m. 305.; Kaitere, 2h. 22m. 30s. ; Camper. 2h. 26m. ; Shadow, 2h. 28m. All the boats from the start went, away at top speed, and made good time before wind and tide up to Chelsea, but coming down the harbouragainst the strong wind, sea, and tide pace was consequently deduced. Regal, which was in the had, got. away from Kaipai and Alleyne, and the others. Shadow, coming very "fast, passed Ripple before the North Head was reached. There was a very heavy sea when Motaitapu was opened up, and at this point Kaitere, Emerald, Alleyne, Camper, and Tawhiri retired from the contest. Regal maintained the lead, although Shadow made a great race of it, and had it not been that, her engines stopped for quite Bm. in Rangitoto Channel, she would have easily won. The finishing times wore: Regal, sh. 58m. ss. ; Shadow, sh. 58m. 305.; Kapai, 6h. 3m. 10s. ; Ripple, 6h. 4m. 12s. Regal thus wins A protest has, however, been lodged by Shadow against, Regal taking the prize, on the grounds that the latter boat having been debarred from entering for the race last year she was not eligible to compete this year. The protest will bo considered by the officials this week.

E. Porter and Co.'s trophy. Course: Seven knots. From flagship round pile beacon off Chelsea; round buoy off Calliope Dock, round buoy off Point Resolution, finishing off flagship. (lm. lab') Just before reaching the pile lieacun Taihoa's engines broke down, and it took a considerable time to get- thorn, going again. when she retired from the race. Iri made a good race of it, passing Tawiki, and kept the lead until passing St. George's Bay, when Tempest, which in the meantime had passed all of the others, got on even terms with her, and soon took tin' lead. The following were the finishing times: Tempest, 4h. 21m. Bs.; Iri, 41i. 22m. 55.; Edna, 41i. 24m.; Sunbeam. 4!i. 24m. 305.; Tawiki. 4h. 25m. 305.; Rangatira, 4h. 26m. Tempest therefore wins.
