, NOTES (IN THE RACING. [BY TKI.KORAPH. —OWN (.OURINTO NT. Wellington, Tuesday.
The withdrawal of Ghoorka, St. .100, and Ellerton reduced the Cup field to eight. Achilles held his position firmly as favourite, and the solid support accorded him brought his price to a shade over even money. The son of Medallion, who hud inside* running, won Ins race from end to end. and galloped half a mile past the po-t, before he could be pulled up. The time registered has only been three times beaten in the history of the race. Achilles and his rider, C. Jenkins, got a great reception on returning to the enclosure. Apa, who beat; all others, is a most unlucky hor.-e, h" having previously acted as runner-up in the Manawatu. Ashhurst. and Rangitikei Cups. Zimmerman, at a mile, looked like getting to Achilles, but he dropped back again and finished sixth. Rourrasque was fourth and Mystification, who was sore and ran in the rear most of file way, fifth. Mr. G. G. Stead, who was present, supplied the following times of the intermediate stag<-s of the race:—Two furlongs, 25 s.; four furlongs, 50s. : six furlongs, 1 in. 15s. : one mile, Jm. 41,!-. ; one mile and a-iialf. 2m. 35 s. Munjeef, who was backed down to less than level money, won the Telegraph Handicap from end to end. She was well backed in the doubles with Achilles, the combination paying £7 18.s. Chatterer (St. Andrew—Whisper), the winner of the Tougiiriro Hack Handicap, is owned in Hawke's Bay. Both horses will be in better company later on. A slashing finish was witnessed between the placed horses in the Nursery 11 audita p. Downfall was withdrawn in favour of his stable mate, Finery. The latter was made, a strong favourite, but could onlv finish fifth.
Ballaraf, who was withdrawn from the Telegraph Handicap, was made a. big favourite for the Electric Handicap. (ioltl'-n Gate, however, beat Iter comfortably at the finish. This was the Hon. ,1. I). Ormond's only success during the afternoon.
