The death of the late Dr. Rainy, for many years principal of the New College, Edinburgh, removes one of the most prominent figures in Scotch ecclesiastical circles. For many years Dr. Rainy was th« leader of the Free Church of Scotland, and since the union of the Free and United Presbyterian Churches, the United Free Church has recognised hia leadership by his selection as Moderator of the Assembly of the United Church, a position " which he occupied in 1900 and 1905. He was extruded with all his colleagues from the college buildings in virtue of the decision of tile .Lords on appeal, in the Scottish Church cage, in October, 190?. He had led the churches in the movement for union, and he also was the leader of the United Church in its successful effort to get possession of a fair share of the church and college buildings, of which it had been dispossessed. He held first place in Scotland as an ecclesiastical statesman.
