THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
DEPARTURE OF THE VENTURA.
The mail steamer Ventura (Captain H. M
Haywood) arrived from- Sydney at three a.m. on Saturday, having experienced heavy
weather for the first two days, followed by
fine weather to arrival. The steamer was docked at Sydney for cleaning and painting. In addition to this she had her old propellers fitted on in place of those then in use. By this change it is etated that the Ventura will be able to steam much faster. The first and second saloons of the steamer " were well patronised, and also' the steerage. The steamer had a large number of through passengers from Sydney, many of whom are bound for England and the Continent. The
cargo from Sydney included largo lines of mutton, timber, tin. skins, glue pieces,
wool, sulphate of ammonia, cocoanut oil,
and other colonial products. From Auckland the Venfcxra took lines of produce, meats, etc., for Samoa, and general mer-
chandise for San Francisco. The steamer
resumed her voyage to Island ports and San Francisco in the afternoon, and is due at the Californiau port about January 7 or 8.
The inward mail .steamer (Sonoma) with
the British mails, k expected to sail from San Francisco on Thursday next, and is due about January 14.
