BUSH FIRE AT RAURIMU.
.SEVERAL PEOPLE RENDERED HOMELESS. Ajjoct two o'clock on Saturday a bush fire broke out in New Town, Raurimu,
caused, it is believed, by sparks from the * railway engine settling in the under scrub. Fortunately there was only a slight breeze blowing, and this in a direction opposite to the town proper, otherwise the, fire might have swept the town, everything being at present very dry. Fully a dozen people were rendered homeless by the fire. Numbers of the residents pulled their camps down to save destruction by fire. A large staff of willing bushmen got to work with their axes and prevented the lire from spreading in the direction of the thickest populated places. The buwhrnen felled trees that were ablaze at the top, and when they fell bucket brigade poured water on the burning foliage.
