SWIMMING.

A considerable number of swimmers have put in an appearar.ee at the baths during the warm weather of the past few days, and as several strangers have also been in the water everything points to a good season. Some of the clubs in the South have already made a start, and the season in Australia was inaugurated a couple of weeks ago. Two annual meetings of clubs have been held during the past few 'days. At the Auckland Club's meeting there was a fair attendance, and the reassuring statement was made (hat the committee intended to hold a dock carnival, for the express purpose of paying over all prizes due. The balance-sheet showed that (he club had a balance to credit, and the committee therefore have something to start the season with. The club also possesses a large amount of material stored at the baths, and the City Council 'is to bo a'ked to take this over at. a price. If this is agreed to by the city fathers the club's funds' will be further augmented. Some excellent officers' were elected, and a committee which should not, allow swimming to flag in any way. Mr. C. (_!. Knox, a veteran supporter of swimminir. was again elected lion, secretary. The Y.M.C.A. Club's meeting passed off smoothly. The. old committee are to be congratulated on the sound position of the club, and I trust the committee for this year will do as much to push swimming along as was done by their predecessors last year. Mr. AY. Carnahan was, elected lion. secretary and treasurer. Mr. Mitchell, the secretary of the Y.M.C.A.. informs me that the club has a membership of about 80, which is highly satisfactory to so young a chili. The membership fee has been fixed at _2s 6d. Now that there are three clubs in existence here the question of forming an Auckland centre should be at once taken in hand. A centre . is absolutely necessary for the proper government of swimming, and is the only responsible body to communicate officially with the New Zealand Association, and, at. the same time, represent Auckland matters to the Christchurch council. The newly-formed City District Club, with Mr. G. Donaldson at the helm, is, as anticipated, a live body. At a meeting of the committee held during the week rules were approved and will be submitted to a general meeting next Wednesday at the Sports Club. The club is affiliating with the New Zealand Association. There are already 50 active members, which alone is a healthy siorn. The committee have decided to open flie season some time this month with a club night in the Albert-street Baths and to hold a. dock carnival on Christmas Day. Messrs. J. Mcllhone and S. Kean, of the committee, have both unfortunately been compelled to resign, the former going to Cambridge and the latter to Wellington. The vacancies will be filled at the general meeting. In view of the efforts of the Mount Eden School Committee to erect » swimming bath at the school the following from Christchurch is interesting:—''The swimming bath which has been made in the Waltham school grounds was opened recently by Dr. C. ,1. Russell in the presence of a large gathering of Waltham residents. Mr. Hughes said that, the committee, comprising members of the School Committee and other residents, which had taken in hand the construction of the bath, had received from various sources the stun of £366 15s sd, two bazaars having lealised £120 Is lOd, and subscriptions amounting to £155 1S» 7d having been collected. The expenditure on tho bath had been £356 0s 7-.1. and there were accounts duo amounting to about £16. The committee would be able to moot them, and would still have a small credit balance, which would provide for improvements in the equipment of the bath." The Mount Eden committee might find it to their advantage to obtain all particulars possible regarding the Waltham bath. They might prove of considerable assistance.
