New Zealand Herald Office, Friday evening. Fair business was done on the sharemarket to-day. In investment lines New Zealand Insurances sold at £3 18s, and closed with demand at £3 17s 6d and sellers at £3 19s. New issue shares changed hands at £3 15s, and more wero wanted at £3 14s 9d, late sellers quoting £3 16s. National Insurances were done at 255, and there was further inquiry at that figure, no declared sellers. South British wero a bit easier, and after sales at £5 4s closed with sellers at £5 5s and buyers at £5 2s 6d. Auckland Gas were placed at £14 17s, and more wero wanted at £1* 16s, late sellers demanding £14 18s. Kauri Timbers (contributing) sold at 5s Id and 5s 2d, and more were wanted at 5s Id, late sellers 5s 3d. Auckland Tramways had sales at £11 12s, and more could have been placed at £11 10s 6d, late sellers quoting £11 13s. N.Z. Portland Cements were done at 39s 3d; late sellers 39s 6d, buyers 38s 6d. In mining stocks Waihis had transactions at £8 17s, and more were available at that price, late buyers offering £8 16s 6d. Talismans sold at 29s 6d: late sellers 29s 9d, buyers 29s 3d. FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Business in the local fruit and produce markets lias been quiet during the past week, and outside of consignments from America supplies generoily have been light. The supplies of potatoes were equal to the demand, at about last week's rates. A shipment from Canada by the steamer i'ondo, considering the long voyage, were landed in fairly good order, the quality and variety being excellent. New local potatoes came to banc) in considerable quantities, although no very heavy consignments were handled at the auction sales. The blight having made its appearance in some of the small patches near the city, forced digging before the tubers were tit, the result being that the greater portion of the supplies were of poor quality. Prices for good samples, however, ruled high. In vegetables, such lines as green peas, cauliflowers, and rhubarb sold at good rates. whilst other vegetables were quitted at very low rates. In onions, the stocks having run low. an advance of 5s per cwt took place on Monday, and the present stocks are not sufficient to supply requirements until the new Sydney lots arc available, which ill be in about three weeks' time. In: dairy produce the supplies of dairy butter at the auction sales to-day were very limited, and prices made a slight advance, while milled and dairy varieties for export showed an advance of {d per lb. Cheese was scarce, and bacon and hams advanced in value. In fruit supplies were generally on the small side. The first of the green gooseberries tor the season from Waikato were submitted at to-day's auction sales. Shipments from Sydney by the Manuka on. Monday consisted of oranges, mandarins, and passionfruit, which were generally of poor quality. Local lemons and tomatoes sold at higher prices than last week, while grapes sold lower. Poor Man's oranges were practically unsalable. A small shipment of bananas and pines from Fiji arrived by the Wliangape on Tuesday and met with a good demand. The Sonoma lauded a large cargo of green apples from San Francisco on Monday, which sold well. Poultry was in moderate supply and high prices ruled. A fair number of young pigs were penned and sold at late rates. The following were the ruling prices at the auction sales to-day :— Field Produce.—Potatoes: Southern. £11 to £12 ton; Victorian. £11 to £12; Canadian, £11 to £12; new local, prime 2jd to 2jjd per lb, poor Id to lid. Kumaras: Island, 6* to 7s cwt. Onions: American, 16s to 18s cwt. Chatf, £5 5s to £5 10s ton ex store. Vegetables.—Ureeti peas, Is. 3d to Is 6d peek; asparagus, 3s to 6s dozen. Dairy Produce.—Dairy and separator butter, lOd to 10id lb; pastry, to 9d; milled, in bulk, for export, 10Jd ; factory rolls. Is. Eggs: Fresh, Bjd to 9d dozen. Cheese: Farmers', 6d lb; factory, 7d ; loaf, unprocurable. Bacon: Farmers', 5d to 6d lb; factory. 7jd to Bd. Ham?: Farmers', 5d to 6d: factory, B|d to 9d.
