MR. HEARST AND TAMMANY.
AN ALLEGED COMPACT. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— New York, November 1. The New York Evening Post exposes what it describes as a compact between Mr. W. K. Hearst and Mr. Murphy, the Tammany "boss," under which the former undertakes, if elected Governor of New York Stale, to give Tammany ten judgeships. • It also publishes Court records to show that' libel actions have been commenced against Mr. Hearst in which damages aggregating £1,000,000 are claimed.
Mr. Hearst is the Democratic candidate for the governorship of New York State, and his success would be considered a favourable augury for the chances of Mr. Bryan in the next Presidential election. The allegation as to an alliance between Mr. Hearst and Tammany was first made in September, and it was then denied. Hitherto Mr. Hearst has been an opponent of Tammany. The Republican candidate is Mr. Charles Hughes, a lawyer.
