Roman Catholic portion of this com* irunity sustained a severe loss by the death, on September 9, of the venerable "i Bishop Lamaze, which occurred at the mission in ;. Maufaga. The deceased prelate was a na- • 3. *; tive of the town of Saint ; Die, in France, and had reached the age*of 73 years. .For some years past he had been-in failing health, the hardships .of the early mission days in the Islands having told on hiscon-^<:' : stitution. The- end had been looked for during the previous week, as he had become weaker, though retaining bis faculties cleat and undimmed until the final moment. The • ; body lay 4in state until the following day, ' when it was interred' in a vaultiwhich^had": been prepared in the floor of the church in Maufaga.
