BOXING.

r '.. « ■- ' r The representatives of the Northern Boxing Association—Messrs. Whitford (feather), ■ C. R. Cottcrill (light), 'and J. Maloney ' (middle)accompanied by Mr. A. Hamilton, 1 as manager, left on Monday last by the s.s. ' Ngatiawa for Kohukohu to participate in ; theboxing tournament there. - Tho trip ex- ' tends over a period of nino days, and the ' Kohukohu Association have made elaborate '. preparations for the carnival and spared no " efforts to make the excursion thoroughly enjoyable to the. Auckland contingent. '. The Northern Boxing Association will !■' hold another private club night next Monday evening (Bth hist.) in the clubrooms, Victoria-street, and all intending lion, mem- | hers are invited to be present. Already a '. largo number of names have been handed ' in to the secretary and manager, and the [ list 'is rapidly filling. The programme for Monday will be a good one, and the preliminaries will be supplied by specially pick- ? ©d men, so that everything points to a splcn- \ did evening's sport. I Whitford, who drew a bye in the chami pionships, and consequently did not meet H. Donovan in the feather-weight, chal- [ lenges him to a contestbest of six rounds .: to take place in the Northern Boxing Association's clubrooms on a date to be agreed upon. Failing Donovan he is willing to • meet McGovern. The Northern Boxing As- , sociation will provide a trophy for the con-: ■ test. ' C. Cottcrill, light-weight, has announced ► his willingness to meet Rogers in a six- . round contest for a trophy. , These two lads have fought several drawn contests, and the [. bouts were of a decidedly interesting nature, i so that the arrangement of another ■ match I would bo looked forward to with great in- , terest. i The proposed six-round contest between John McConnell, Australian champion, and J. McNeill may possibly come off in November, as it is understood McConnell has i no objection to mooting McNeill. .If this con- ■ test eventuates lam informed that T. Lewis, middle-weight champion of Auckland, would i have no objection to trying conclusions with tho winner for the heavy-weight champion-, ship of Auckland. Lewis has also challenged ■ Donovan, middle-weight champion for 1905, > to a contest for the best of six rounds, and will bo glad to receive a reply at an early date. .•- A match between these two men i would looked forward tot, with consider--1 able interest, and" now that Lewis has • brought the matter "to. a head by challeng- 1 ing Donovan it is hoped the association will endeavour to arrange a contest at an early date. ' " .', ; Hock Keyes passed through by 'the Sierra on his way to Sydney last Tuesday. Chat-' i ting to Mr. Trudgeon, of the Northern As- ', sociation, he stated that he expected a com- 1 munication from Mr. Coffey with regard to a return match with Tracey, of Wellington, ' but as it had not come to hand,, he went on to Sydney. Apparently the letter from the • secretary of the Wellington Association to ; Hock Keyes' trainer (McDonald) has gone astray, as the latter received no advices. ' This is rather unfortunate for tho Welling- '■ ' ton Association authorities, as they expected to have the return match on October 19. '■'■' ■ Now in all probability it will lead to the postponement of the carnival. Tho associa- ' tion had also asked Sanderson to go down • ' to meet Tresize, of Christchurch. n«/ls«;/ . i Dr. Napier-McLean, who has been on an extended trip to Groat Britain., and . the United States, returned to Wellington last week. ; During his absence abroad this en-, thusiastic follower of the fistic art visited all the leading boxing institutions, and saw tho greatest exponents of boxing testing their' skill in the roped arena. Dr. McLean. was not much in love with many of the decisions given in the States." They were simply eon- , trary to all rules >of -boxing. Dr. McLean- 1 ", was also present at the recent Australasian amateur boxing championships •in Sydney. He was not satisfied with Dickinson's verdict over Ben Tracy, and his opinion is that the New South Wales ex-champion in the Australasian bantam-weight was out-pointed: I by the" Wellington lad. Dr. McLean's set--' ' , vices will be once more, placed at the disposal of the Wellington .Boxing Association - in tho event of the Hock Keyes v. Tracey projected tourney coining to a head. Advices from Melbourne are to the effect that the negotiations that were in progress to bring O'Brien and W. Squire* together in Australia for tho world's boxing championship have been broken off, and the match abandoned. Numerous cables have recently passed between Mr. Wren and O'Brien,, concerning the legislation contemplated by the Victorian Government, and O'Bricu considered that it would be inadvisable in the circumstances for him to make the trip. Mr. Wren assured him that even if the prohibitive legislation were enacted in Victoria the match between Squires and himself would undoubtedly take place if ho desired in one of tho "other States where there was no objection to a world's championship boxing match. O'Brien, however, seems to have concluded that the proposed prohibitive legislation is directed at his visit particularly, for he has cabled his ultimatum flatly declining to come. A movement is on foot in Australia, to raise a subscription for the purpose of sending Squires to America to challenge O'Brien. Mr. Wren has promised £100 towards the fund, and it is expected that a sum of £500 will be readily subscribed to enable the Australian champion to make the trip.
