GRANTHAM RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

TWELVE KILLED: SIXTEEN INJURED. SIGNALS AGAINST THE DRIVER. THE FIREMAN SHOUTS WILDLY. IMPRISONED IX BURNING CARRIAGES. CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. By Telegraph Press Association.—Copyright. London, September 20. Four of the coaches of the Scotch express, wrecked at Grantham Junction yesterday, were derailed and fell over the embankment.

In the fall the carriages were reduced to matchwood, and taking fire blazed furiously.

There were piteous scenes, owing to the inability of the bystanders to render aid to the imprisoned passengers. (Received September 21. 9 p.m.) London, September 21. In the Grantham railway accident 12 people were killed and 16 injured, eight of them severely. Among the killed was Mr. Philipson, a director of the, North-Eastern Railway Company. All the signals were against the train, but it ran through the points on the Nottingham line. There being a sharp curve at this point the engine became derailed, just as in the Salisbury accident. The brakes.were in perfect order, but it is supposed the connectingrod had broken when approaching Grantham, or that the driver forgot that he had to stop at the station. The wreckage was on fire for hours. Forty mail bags were burned. (Received September 21. 10.56 p.m.) London, September 21. The fireman of the Scotch express was " shouting wildly" as the train was traversing Grantham station. The Times says it was the fireman's duty, when engines were changed at Peterborough, to see that the vacuum brake was attached to the engine before starting. If that had been neglected the apparent inability to stop at Grantham station is easily explained.
