I hear that Mr. R. H. Walton, M.8., Ch.B. (Auckland), one of this year'* graduates of the Edinburgh University, has been | appointed house surgeon to the Infirmary &t Huddersfield. , '■ Sir. and Mrs. W. Bell Common (Gisborne) came Home by the s.s. lonic. Mr. Common undertook the trip Home to seek medical advice, and he . has put himself under a well-known specialist. ' Mr. Charnptaloup is one of two men of his year who have passed each of the four " proiessionp.k" for the degrees *' with distinction,," and record shows, th«tlduring his course of study at the University of Edin- £ burgh . this student from New' Zealand has i secured some eighteen medals and prizes.

; Mr. C. Lodder, of the Waibi Gold Mining Company, arrived in London k little while ago, having travelled via San Francisco. ll© will remain in London for a. short time as he has made 'arrangements to have frequent consultations with the chairman and directors of the Waihi Gold Mining Company. Several business : interviews have already taken place.

Mr. F. Wilding and his son, Mr. A. ._F. Wilding (Christehurch), have been playing tennis at the Shrewsbury Tournament. Flaying- together, father and son won the Gentlemen's Doubles Handicap; (Ik latter won tlw Gentlemen's Singles Challenge Cup, defeating the holder (Mr. E. R, Allen) in the final; and in association with Miss Pinekney he ran through the Mixed Doubles Handicap, and divided the prize with Mr. H. Chiswell and Mrs. Hawker, time preventing the arrival of a definite issue.

Some of the prize-winning', students of the Boyal Academy of Music took part in a pianoforte recital at the Bcchstein Hall a few days ago. One of the performers was the * New Zealand. student;*; Master Frank Hutchens, who played the '" Va'riiitions'' ot Chopin numbered Op. 12. as wcllas York Bowen's "Miniature Suite." Hit?,- performance occasioned much V applause, and a musical ;' critic who was - present says that Master Hutchens "showed fluency, neat inns, precision, and careful attention to detail." He is studying under Mr. v Tobias Matthay.

Miss Irene Ainsley, the Auckland contralto, had the honour/of singing to the Prince and Princess of Wales, by special command, at Marlborough House, last Wednesday evening. Her song was that lamentation by a Hindoo woman upon her deceased hushed,, so expressively set by the French composer Bcmberg, upon the interpretation of ; which by Miss Ainsley I commented in my notes upon her first public appearance in London. The Prince and Princess cordially complimented her upon her performance, •■ and:.presented her with a beautiful ■ brooch bearing the monogram "G. arid M." in diamonds.

Information has reached me that Mr. ; Samuel Tinsloy, chess editor of the London S> Times, and the Times Weekly Edition, will ', this week begin the publication in the chess column of those papers of a series of articles on New Zealand chess problem composers, ,: illustrated by /selections of their problems. There will bef twelve articles, and they will - be published weekly. The article and problems are compiled from material furnished', by Mr. S. . S. Blackburne, of Ohristchurch, , and the articles are written:;-by'; Mr. Allan 0. Yesterday the Shaw -Savill and 'Albion Company's steamer . Kumara sailed from London, outward bound for New Zealand. Captain A. Morton is in command,* and the medical, officer on board is Mr. Sydney T. Champtaloup, M.8., Ch.B. (Auckland), who is going out to the colony for trip during the summer vacation of the Edinburgh University. The steamer lakes a large number of passengers, 'about 200 in all/including: The Rev.
