[BY Ti:Lia;r.APH.—i'kess association.] Gisbosxk. Tuesday. Mr. Masox. of Auckland, contractor for the Cook Memorial, lias arrived, and is making arrangements for the work. The monument, which was made at Aberdeen, Scotland, of the world-famous granite, is aboard the Marere, due at Auckland. It is expected the monument will be in position in five week*. The unveiling will probably be deferred til! October 3. Cook's Day. •" The number of sheep in this distrist is 1,578,482, an increass of 142,000 upon the total of last year. The amateurs have " The Gondoliers" in preparation for carnival week in October. A trial shipment from lhe«liewiy-opened seam of coal in the Whangarei district which has readied the local market lias been pronounced excellent for household purposes, and as it is said the coal can be landed Jtere at 25s per ton, the Auckland product should oust the imported article, which is* so largely used at present. The 5..«. Kotare left for Auckland yesterday with a further consignment of sheep.
