ROD AND GUN.
The Department of Marine (Wellington) is getting full particulars of the experiment mado by New South Wales in connection with tho Introduction of plaice from England (says the Sydney Referee). They propose to take steps to introduce turbot, herring, cod, and haddock to New Zealand marine waters. When they have dono that they may profit by . the experiences of this country and protect the fish by adequate closures, not for the" sake of sportsmen or amateurs, but in the interests of the fishermen who live by trawling. Under the heading "Sport in New Zealand" the following letter appeared in a recent issue of the Field:—-"May I through your paper" warn any sportsman coming to this country with the intention of shooting red deer or fishing to take the glowing, advertisements of the New Zealand Tourist Association with a considerable grain of salt.' I went last week"tc the much-vaunted Haurangi Forest, in the Wairarapa district, to stalk, and after travelling for three days by sea, rail, coach, and on horseback, found the whole district reserved and carefully watched by four men. This, too, after having paid £1 to the Government for a license to shoot this district. .No public notice had been given, or, if so. in such a way that it was not known, and at least a dozen or so of stalkers have experienced the same disappointment. There is no want of splendid stags on the forest, with beautiful heads, and with the. reserve open the best of sport would be obtainable. Intending sportsmen should make very careful inquiries' before acting on these advertisements, as I understand similar disappointments have- been met with in other directions besides stalking.—W.
