A PRIVATE WHARF.

QUESTION OF RIGHT TO ERECT. , THE question of a private right to erect a wharf came before the Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday, in a letter from Mr. J. J. Craig, who, writing with reference to the Board's decision refusing his application for the erection of a wharf abutting on the Railway Wharf, stated that he considered .the Board had treated him with scant courtesy, seeing that- he gave up his rights to 30ft by 100 ft adjoining the old Railway Wharf, without any consideration whatever, although he had two rights, viz., by deed of lease to the Frozen Meat Company, about 28 years still to run, and then by license from the Board to erect wharves for 14 years. He thought the Board had arrived at its decision without due consideration, and he desired an opportunity to meet the Board or a committee to consider the matter. Had lie' retained the 30ft by 100 ft there would have- been this space between the old Railway Wharf and his proposed wharf, and by his doing the Board a good turn ■ the Board penalised him by refusing permission. He applied to the Board opeifly and through courtesy, to show what lie proposed doing, although in law he was not bound to do so, as he had written permission by deed to erect a wharf or wharves on this land, and the Board could not stop him from erecting the wharf as proposed. The chairman (Mr. Mitchelson) said this application was considered by the Board, and on the advice of its solicitors it declined the application. He failed to see how any other decision could have been arrived at. Mr. Craig asked that the matter be again considered, and ho (the chairman) would- therefore move that the letter be referred to the Works and Tariff Committee, and Mr. Craig could wait on the committee. The motion was carried.
